Apollo 15 and 16 Subsatellites

Sample lunar map.

UCLA provided fluxgate magnetometers for the Apollo 15 and 16 subsatellites that were placed in near-equitorial orbits at close to 100 km altitude above the lunar surface on August 4, 1971 and April 24, 1972. The Apollo 15 subsatellite returned magnetic field measurements for over 6 months and the Apollo 16 subsatellite provided measurements for 34 days until it crashed into the lunar surface.
